HISTORY
The purpose of establishing the School of Professional and Continuing Studies is to provide adults with lifelong
learning opportunities. The School originated as the Evening School and the Center for Extension Education. The Evening
School was established in 1960, and the Center for Extension Education in 1987. The two units were merged to form the School of Professional and Continuing Studies.
ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS
The general tasks of the School include:
(1) To plan, coordinate and develop adult lifelong learning programs.
(2) To conduct on-the-job training authorized by various public or private institutes.
(3) To coordinate and cooperate in continuing education and professional development programs authorized by foreign institutes.
(4) To manage related matters pertaining to continuing education and
professional development. The School has five academic departments: the Department of Chinese Literature, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the Department of History, the Department of Law, and the Department of Business Administration. In addition, the School has five administrative subdivisions responsible for professional development, academic affairs, student affairs, business affairs, and distance learning.
Continuing Education¡Ðwhich originated from the Evening School in 1997, currently offers five programs leading to a bachelor¡¦s degree. From 2002 onward, people who had graduated from senior high schools, vocational high for one year (this rule had been canceled starting from 2006), or equivalence and who are on-the-job may apply to this Division. Students are expected to finish the program with a minimum of 128 credits in 5 years, which may be prolonged to seven years. Upon graduation, students will be awarded a bachelor¡¦s degree either in literature, commerce, or law. All classes are held after 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except during summer and winter breaks. When necessary, classes may be scheduled on Saturday or Sunday. All continuing education curriculums are consistent with the regular academic programs. Courses are normally distributed over a five-year period. Students should take at least 6 credits but no more than 20 credits per semester. In the spring semester of 2006, the Division had 852 students in five continuing education programs. In a total of 47 years¡Ðfrom the Evening School¡¦s inception until 2006, the Division has graduated 10,063 students. Due to the thriving growth in higher education over recent years, the undergraduate enrollment in daytime classes has exceeded the student limit with the effect that recruitment for the Evening School had to be curtailed. To conform to the goal of pursuing academic excellence, to operate at the top-notch level as a university, and considering the orientation of the Division and the expectations of society, NTU passed the decision in the academic year 2006 to stop recruiting new students for Evening School.
